Short Term GRADUATE Fellowships
The Nicholson Center for British Studies at the University of Chicago is pleased to announce its fifth competition for Nicholson short term GRADUATE fellowships for research in the British Isles.
Eligibility
University of Chicago Ph.D. students from the Humanities, Social Sciences, Divinity School, and Law School are eligible. Students should have passed their exams prior to taking up the fellowship, but need not have a dissertation proposal yet.
Scope
The Nicholson Center is happy to support any dissertation project from any doctoral student in the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions or Divinity School, or any student in the Law School provided that the student can demonstrate that (s)he has research requirements that must be completed in the British Isles. Applicants need not have the British Isles themselves as a primary focus of research, although those that do concentrate on the British Isles or former British Empire will be given preference. Research in and projects about Ireland also meet our requirements. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their need to conduct research in the British Isles. The short term fellowships are generally designed to fund students who expect to spend three months or fewer in the UK; past awards have ranged from $1900 to $5200, but requests that do not fall within these parameters will also be considered.
Application
Applications must be submitted no later than 5pm on Friday, April 18, 2008 to Eva Wilhelm, Classics Building, Room 114 (ewilhelm@uchicago.edu, 773-834-3403). Applicants should submit BOTH paper AND electronic copies of the application. Paper copies may be mailed or dropped off, electronic copies should be e-mailed as Word attachments to ewilhelm@uchicago.edu. The application materials include:
- Nicholson GRADUATE Cover Sheet (download here)
- 2 - 3 page project proposal
- 1-page explanation of why and for how long the applicant needs to be in the British Isles
- Rough budget covering the entire trip, including the amount being requested
- Current CV
- E-mail from the student's departmental Chair of Graduate Studies stating that the student is on track to pass all departmental exams before student intends to travel (electronic version only)
Award
Fellowship decisions will be made by May 9, 2008. The number of awards given and the amount of each award will be based on the needs of the strongest applicants.
